What is MapLibre?
MapLibre is free, open-source software for putting interactive maps in websites and apps. It draws the map; you choose where the map data comes from.

MapLibre's map libraries are free to use, change, and ship, under permissive licenses (BSD-3-Clause for the web, BSD-2-Clause for apps). No license fee and no account.
Your choice of map data
The map's streets, labels, and terrain come from a basemap: a free one, a commercial provider, or your own files. You can switch without rewriting your map.
Run by its community
The MapLibre Organization runs the projects in the open, with an elected board and sponsors that include companies listed here. It is used in 156 products in this directory.

What a map costs
The library is free. What you may pay for is the map data and where it is served from, and there are free options for both.
- the library
- Free and open source. MapLibre GL JS is BSD-3-Clause and MapLibre Native is BSD-2-Clause: no license fee and no account.
- basemap tiles
- Free hosted basemaps exist: OpenFreeMap and VersaTiles need no API key and charge no usage fees, and OpenFreeMap also needs no registration and sets no limit on map views or requests. Commercial providers such as MapTiler, Stadia Maps and Jawg offer free tiers with monthly limits for testing or non-commercial use, and paid plans for commercial use.
- hosting your own tiles
- You can host the map data yourself. Protomaps publishes a whole-world basemap from OpenStreetMap as a single PMTiles file of roughly 120 GB (or cut out just your region; OpenStreetMap attribution required), which can sit on ordinary cloud storage such as S3 and be read by MapLibre GL JS directly, with no tile server; Protomaps describes this as enabling low-cost, zero-maintenance map applications. For data in a database, MapLibre's Martin tile server can serve tiles from PostGIS, PMTiles or MBTiles.

How it compares
Mapbox GL JS and the Google Maps JavaScript API are established, well-documented ways to put a map on a website, and MapLibre GL JS began as a fork of Mapbox GL JS. The main differences are the license and who provides the map data.

Where it came from
MapLibre started in December 2020 as a community fork of Mapbox GL JS v1.13 and Mapbox GL Native. Mapbox GL JS v2.0.0, released on 8 December 2020, moved from the BSD-3-Clause open-source license to a proprietary license tied to the Mapbox Terms of Service, and MapLibre carried on from the last open-source code. The MapLibre GitHub organization was created on 9 December 2020, and the first maplibre-gl release (1.13.0-rc.0) was published on npm on 10 December 2020.
Who runs it
MapLibre is run by the MapLibre Organization, an umbrella for open-source mapping projects, under a Charter its Voting Members approved on 25 August 2022. It has three governance bodies. The Technical Steering Committee is open to anyone, meets monthly on a video call, and decides whether proposed changes with a major impact are accepted. The Governing Board has 5 members, elected every year by the Voting Members with ranked-choice voting; it sets the overall direction, is responsible for the finances, publishes quarterly financial reports, and has final authority over project decisions. No more than one board member may be employed or contracted by the same company, and board members are not paid for their board work. Voting Members (171 listed on 29 September 2026) are people who contributed in a non-trivial way or donated; they elect the Board and vote on changes to the Charter, and at most 10 percent of them may be employed by one company. MapLibre GL JS, MapLibre Native and the Style Specification are its Core projects, which get paid maintainer time and paid bounties. Funding comes from companies in the Sponsorship Program, who commit for at least two years, and from individual donations through Open Collective and GitHub Sponsors; it pays maintainers for MapLibre GL JS and MapLibre Native, a coordinator, and a development fund. MapLibre's fiscal host is Open Source Collective, a registered 501(c)(6) non-profit in Covina, California (USA): all transactions go to Open Source Collective, and every expense is public on Open Collective.
maplibre.org/sponsors lists the current members of the MapLibre Sponsorship Program in two tiers. Gold: Amazon (AWS). Silver: CalTopo, Jawg, Komoot, Mapme, MapTiler, Microsoft, Mierune, Radar and SmartMaps. The program also offers Diamond and Platinum tiers; no sponsors are listed in them today.
The maplibre-gl package was downloaded 5,961,782 times from npm in the week of 21 to 27 September 2026, and the MapLibre GL JS repository has 11,763 stars on GitHub (both read on 29 September 2026).
